| Type O Negative defines Goth |
Type O is one of those bands that makes a
personal difference in the lives of those who are drawn to them. For me it was
like a beacon calling the first time I heard "Love You To Death." I
was a moth to the flame. Then I heard Christian Woman and Can't Lose You and
realized that this is one of those bands that just rises above so many others.
The deep, rich vocals and heavy breathing laced with tight and heavy guitar
riffs is in a league of its own. These days its hard to find originality but
Type O succeeds in blending goth with metal while also exuding poetry and
romance. They have a way of making hard seem soft, and most of their 7 minute
plus songs have a beautifully woven melodic slowness somewhere near the middle
that just takes you over the edge, and then they bang you back into place like
a hammer on a nail.
The religious undertones which abound in much of their work bring goth to a new
level. We're not talking about background music here. This is not something you
wash the dishes to. Type O is an experience. If you can't break into a church
and load it up with surround sound, light the candelabras and crank those
speakers in the middle of the night ---then just slip on some quality
headphones, have a glass of wine or a reefer, and blast off.
