Vampire Beach Babes Saturday October 28th, 2000 The Big Bop

I had heard about these guys a few times because of their recent featuring on the Gothic Sanctuary disc (available in record store everywhere from Attic) as well as Divinity keeps on mentioning them. So when I heard that they were going to play at the Rue Morgue (Canada's leading horror magazine) halloween anniversary party...I was thinking....around Halloween...Vampire Beach Babes....that is too cool.

Though as the band took the stage, I think that they realized one key thing about audiences around halloween. No one tends to really go crazy and party for fear of ruining their costumes and because they are also too busy staring at other peoples creations (which Rue Morgue was giving away 2500$ in prizes so I can understand why). The Babes put on a pretty wicked first set playing stuff from their debut release "Reckless Summer" (Review in next weeks update). The gothic-surfer thing is an interesting idea though I wish they would play it up a little bit more with their onstage antics. They even threw in the typical Rocky Horror covers (it is a Halloween show after all) which vocalist Baron Marcus did exceptionally well at.

Than it kinda fell apart but it really had not that much to do with the Babes themselves. They had like over an hour of a break between sets...which is way too long. It's hard for the fans to keep up the momentum, and it's just as difficult for the band to get back into the swing of things after that long a break. So the crowd was much less responsive even though the Baron Marcus, Ricky Las Vegas (guitar) gave it their all....

Favourite quirk about the Vampire Beach Babes: Baron Marcus - I have never seen a goth smile so damn much in my life and that is totally wicked.

Special Note: The three titted freak should have won the contest...C'mon Rue Morgue she was robbed....she even poured beer on them.
