Sunday, July 22nd saw Cradle of Filth invade Toronto. And except for the
sound the entire night, the show was quite enjoyable.
I got to the Opera House just after 7:00 and the line up was HUGE.
It really was quite amusing to see the pathetic attempt at corpse paint on
some of those kids.
After skipping the line I found my place near the back and waited for the
opening act Visions of the Night. This was my second time seeing them and I
must say I enjoy their brand of black metal. One of their saving graces
(disgraces?) was the fact that they use a drum machine. This gave the sound
man one less thing to screw up as VoN were the only band that had some
almost decent sound.
VoN played a tight, brutal set that really was quite good.
Next up were long time Toronto black/death metallers Endless. As always they
seem to be a crowd favorite. Although they suffered from horrible sound,
each song was still distinguishable enough to get into and the audience was
more than appreciative with their set.
I am eagerly awaiting the release of their next album and I think their time
is due.
God Forbid the next time I ever have to see God Forbid again.
Whether or not they had good sound or crap sound - I don't think it would
have mattered. Perhaps people heard or saw something other than I did, but
they would have been better suited to play with someone like Limp something
or other. Shame really that Nile couldn't make it.
So finally the stage was set for Cradle of Filth. From the opening note
Dani and Co. just let loose and gave one hell of a show. After about three
songs the soundman finally decided to turn up the volume for Dani. Sure he
is unintelligable to understand, but those shrieks are just simply amazing
to witness.
So we were treated to some material from their latest opus, Bitter Suites to
Succubi, as well as Midian plus a few favorites from the older CD's.
As most shows go there were delays, it ended late, and the sound was
exceptionally bad. But overall it was an enjoyable evening.
