M'lada Fronta with Mimetic

location: Savage Garden, 550 Queen St. W.
date: Sunday June 1st, 2003

It all began a few months ago, I was visiting Savage Garden with my lady Catherine, and had gone up to the Dj booth to request a song. XB-33 by M'lada Fronta.(M.F) DJ Lord Pale informed me that he didn't have the M.F's C.D "High Tension" which contains the track XB-33. He did however inform me that M.F would be playing at Savage with Mimetic on June 1st.

I was excited, I had only heard one club single of M.F, which of course is XB-33, and for the longest time I couldn't even find out who that track was done by, basically because I placed two and two toghether after a friend sold me his copy of the bands latest album "Oxides."

Time went by, I asked several people if they would be attending. In the end, only Catherine was able to come with me, fortunatly, M.F's style creates a sexual aura, something which I will of course speak of later in this review.

Catherine arrived into the city at nine forty five, we immeadiatly proceeded to have a tasty dinner at the Java hut, unfortunetly due to this, we arrived at the show late and right in the middle of Mimetic's performance. From what we heard Mimetic's sound is based around a drum and bass style, but at a lesser tempo, more samples with a higher level of distortion. I can't say much more, only that when we got to the club, there were more people watching Mimetic alone, than I have ever seen at a noise show, I was quite impressed.

We sat, had a few drinks, talked and soon it was time for M'lada Fronta to begin their set. I quickly tried to move up as close as I could get to them, but the floor filled up quite quickly. Luckily though, everybodies first thought was to go to M.F's front, while Catherine and I went to the side. Though my vision was partially obscured by the barrier of "CAUTION" tape that had been put up between us and the performance area.

I have read in interviews with M'lada Fronta lead man Remy Pelleshci that he tries to make every show a little different, when he plays his music live, he actually does just that, and this show was no exception. Watching him I could actually track the changes in music to what Remy was doing with his DAT. Which is something that I've never been able to detect before, and was quite impressed. The atmosphere around him was a little reserved when he started up with C0, the first track off his latest album "Oxides" some people, including myself began moving or banging there heads in unison with the beat, and one girl was dancing. His music was it's usual mix of distorted samples and extremely heavy, lower tempo beats. Setting the stage for the cornicopia of charged electronic energy that was to come. After several tracks, Remy flung us all into his club hit XB-33, I immeadiatly moved away from the wall, into what little room there was to dance. XB-33's exotic like tabla intro, was mixed slightly differently, where certain beats that one would usually expect to hear were due, Remy surprised us all with heavily distorted samples, that followed the same beat structure. In what room there was to dance, the floor exploded into a charged atmosphere of heavy dancing, again, something that can be sorely lacking from many live shows. The last time I felt energy like this was when Sino played with Antigen Shift and Iczoloscope in August of last year.

Remy kept up this atmospher, and kept us all on the floor untill he was finished his set. I believe he even made a follower out of Catherine, who untill she came, had never been to a noise show, and now all she wants me to do is give her more and more info about M'lada Fronta, I had to lend her my entire collection of their C.D's which I was a timy bit reluctant to do.

After that, Catherine and I left quickly, as we would have an early rise the next morning. Fortunetly for myself, the night was not a waste in the slightest, and I look forward to another day when M'lada Fronta might grace Toronto with their presence once again.
