| Vampire Beach Babes - Reckless Summer (Independent)
|
| Tired of
the same old dark and dreary rant from all of your goth collection? Than you
will have to check out this CD. The Vampire Beach Babes are a Toronto act that
is quickly turning heads with their unique style combining goth and surfer
music.
When I put this one into my player I was prepared for the worst. How could
anyone even think to desecrate goth with a style of music that became popular
from movies starring Annette Funicello (Mickey Mouse Club alumni....AAAHHH!!!).
Well, they've done it and surprisingly I actually like it....
Baron Marcus (vocals) and Ricky Las Vegas (guitars) seem to be trying to put
some showmanship into a scene that at times has an otherwise dominantly
depressing live scene. With songs like "Gothic Surf-rama" and
"Tomb Mau Mau" they have endeavoured to form their own style of
gothic surfer music and have all the tools necessary to do it.
The Baron's vocals range from being able to hit those notes that I haven't been
able to since I hit puberty as well as the darker spoken word style. Ricky's
expert guitar work gives the Babes that surfer style that I've mentioned,
taking some of the classic music from those mindless beach movies and
incorporating them into their music.
The Vampire Beach Babes with Reckless Summer are not only trying to get out of
the conventional molds of goth music....they're reforming the mold into a surf
board. The question is the same with any band with weird-ass styles is how long
will it last? Well, whether they decide to change later on into something
different doesn't matter to me. I'm just going to enjoy the surf while the tide
is high!
