| Rhea's Obsession Between Earth and Sky |
| I adore
when a local band gets signed to a major label. And there isn't a label larger
in the industrial scene than Metropolis. So when I had heard that Toronto
legends Rhea's Obsession jumped from Spider to Metropolis, I was undoubtebly
thrilled.
For those that haven't had the chance to hear their music as of yet, you're
missing out on one of the best examples of multi cultural ambient bands around.
They have drawn comparisons to the likes of Dead Can Dance and Delerium heavily
and with good reason. All of these bands borrow from different cultures to
formulate a unique sound (in the case of Rhea's Obsession Bulgarian and East
Indian mostly).
Admittedly, I don't particularly enjoy music out of East India and Bulgaria.
But, with the aid of Jim Field's amazing guitar work and programming to
complement Sue Hutton's incredible vocals what comes out is a package that even
Lisa Gerrard would be a fan of.
The major draw for this band was and continues to be Sue Hutton (no offence Jim
because you're wicked too). Her vocals are smooth and intoxicating and her
obvious intelligence and passion comes across not only in the vocals but the
lyrics. For those that love to hit live shows...keep in mind that both Jim and
Sue are probably two of the most beautiful people in the scene (eye candy
alert!).
Suggestion for your listening pleasure: Grab a glass of scotch (hell, the
bottle will do better) and sit back in a comfortable chair watching a lightning
storm while listening to this album if you want a truly great way to appreciate
this music.
