| Mara's Torment - The Barrier of Skin (Independent)
|
| Little did
I know until I did some research on this act based out of Toronto that our own
web designer Perdition had played a show with Mara's Torment when he was
playing in the band under the same name as his alias. I figured small world at
first...until I remembered the amount of projects that Perdition has been
involved with in the past.
Mara's Torment is the the project of one Rik Maclean. He writes, produces, and
performs all of the aspects of the audio material within the cd. This ambient
project goes well beyond the scope of many out there. As many dark themed
ambient artists can tend to be dull and boring, Rik strays away by creating an
album of tranquil beauty that a lot of the big name ambient artists out there
are still trying to grasp.
As far as I was able to find out Mara is actually based upon an old girlfriend
that I guess still torments Rik's thoughts. It would be safe to say the most
vital musical inspiration that we receive comes from those blissful moments of
pure happiness or lonely moments of utter despair.
Whether Rik continues to derive inspiration from that experience is his own
private concern as I am content to just let the soundscape that he creates with
his music envelop me whole. It has taken me much time to write anything down
about it as every time I sit down to listen I find myself lost in other places
not being able to return to my train of thought until the cd ends. Pain in the
ass to review but this cd will stay with me for much time to come.
