| Celtic Dreams : Visions
of a Past : An Anthology of Irish Poetry |
Here's an
excellent anthology of Irish Poetry. You don't have to be a Gaelic intellect to
decipher the material, it's predominantly in English. Drawn from diverse range
of Irish sources, the poems were from anonymous monks of the Dark Age spanning
over 1000 years ago.
Enriched with profound Irish history of love and respect for nature, this book
of lovely poetry is also coupled with beautiful illustrations of Celtic knot
and spiral patterns. As an added feature to tease your intellectual palate
there is a wee pronunciation guide to help you with the Celtic language.
Here's one I like:
Sloe Gin
The clear weather of juniper
darkened into winter
She fed gin to sloes
and sealed the glass container.
When I unscrewed it
I smelled the disturbed
tart stillness of a bush
Rising through the pantry.
When I poured it
it had a cutting edge
and flamed
like Betelgeuse.
I drink to you
in smoke-mirled, blue-black,
polished sloes. Bitter
and dependable.
