The interview:
Dem from toronto-goth.com (TG) Toronto goth is here with two members of
Perdition. Can you start off by introducing yourselves and talking about what
you do in the band.
Jenn I'm Jenn. I play keyboards. I also do backing vocals, and I write
some lyrics as well.
Chris I'm Chris. I'm on vocals and I write most of the lyrics
TG - Who else is involved with Perdition?
Chris - There's Steven. He's lead guitarist. He plays keyboards and
sequences.
Jenn And there's Raven. He plays rhythm guitar.
Chris And there is Thor who plays bass and also writes some music.
TG - how did you each of you get involved in Perdition?
Chris Well, this would have been early 2001. Thor and I were actually
numerous times talking about getting a project going. We were just going around
trying to find other people. Then he received an ICQ from Steven looking for a
bassist and vocalist. No? You guys don't know what the fuck I'm talking about
or what?
Jenn I got involved with Perdition because I met Steven through
Toronto-Goth, and a mutual friend. He found out that I had been taking vocal
lessons for a few years, and that I had been in a band with friends before. So
we just started talking about possibilities.
TG - Chris, what other musical projects have you been involved
with?
Chris I came up playing punk rock. I was a vocalist for a band called
TBSC back in '92 and '93. In '94 we parted ways and I moved to Kingston,
Ontario where I became involved with a band called The Condemned. We were a
Garage, 60's influence, Punk, through 70's - early kind of stuff. We gradually
got into playing darker music and darker-themed stuff.
Jenn I don't think you really want to hear about this
I was in a
band with some friends. Really it was just a way to have fun and try different
things. I played a bit of guitar then, as well as some keyboards, as well as
backing vocals.
TG - So Perdition has been around since the 1990's. How has it progressed
since then? What is the sound like compared to then?
Chris I'd have to say
I hate to use the word
mature or grown.
But it has definitely progressed as far as the technology that has been readily
available. And a lot of the new recording programs that are readily available
and stuff like that. It tends to make things a lot more accessible in the way
of getting it to sound good.
TG - And you are still doing some of the same songs from
before?
Chris Yes. I rewrote lyrics for Luci. And we are going to be doing a
newer version of Sorrow. And Auto Defe, which was a song that was known before
- a song that Thor wrote - is now entitled Sorry.
Jenn But we have come up with our own interpretations of them.
Chris Set me free is now Wash Away. That song was used in a film.
TG - So what does Perdition sound like?
Chris We take a lot of elements of straight up traditional Goth, as one
would perceive that as. As well as we take a lot of Metal, we take some EBM,
Industrial, Synth pop, and kind of add a bit of our own interpretations to it I
think.
Jenn You didn't say punk.
Chris No I didn't actually - which I was going to say but I thought that
would go under influences.
TG - So who were your (musical) influences?
Chris I came up through more of the Punk scene. I inevitably got into
whatever the hell I want to call myself now. I have no idea what. I just tend
to call myself Chris, just like Thor likes to be called Thor
I can name a
few. Like Anathema has had a big influence on the overall sound, of the music
itself. And My Dying Bride, and or course, Dead Kennedys, Nick Cave.
Jenn Duran Duran!!! Tea Party!!!
Chris Godflesh.
Jenn I think we all have separate influences that we come to the band
with.
Chris I know a lot of what I listen to is always going to be an
influence to me. Because most of the music I listen tends to have some form of
impact on my life which I hope would go in turn with everyone else. A lot of
what I listen to
I listen to Pink Floyd, Tool, Dead Kennedys, The Clash,
Misfits, System of a Down, Anathema.
Jenn Paradise Lost
TG - Is Perdition working on a CD then?
Chris You could say that. We were hoping to have a full length CD
released by the first week of February. But just due to time and availability
of everybody, we are now just going to do an EP of about 4 or 5 songs with
remixes attached as well. So it will be sort of like a promotional thing that
will have a wide variety of influences.
Jenn The remixes on it will come from people who do a lot of different
kinds of music: EBM to Ambient, and heavier Industrial, so it should be quite
interesting.
Chris To hear the various interpretations from other people will be
nice. Because that is what a remix should be - somebody else's interpretation
of what a song should sound like by using key elements of that recording and
manipulating the sounds.
Jenn To create something new.
Chris Yeah. Exactly. Diversification is what this world needs more of.
TG - So you're playing at the Vatikan February 9th?
Jenn That's right.
Chris We have reason to believe.
TG - So what is going on with the show? What can we expect from
it?
Jenn We are going to be playing a set about an hour long. We will
probably get off to an early start. So get there early. Don't miss it.
Chris We are hoping for 10:30pm or maybe 10:45pm. As far as what you can
expect. Expect a lot of sex
just a lot of degradation in general. You
know, debauchery and violence.
Jenn But the songs we will be playing are sort of a mixture of things.
They get pretty harsh at times, and heavy metal-like aspects, but also really
softer Goth-like
Chris I think what you have to expect is something that will take you
through various emotions like: sadness, loss, regret, happiness, remorse. You
know really. We'll just say, wait and see. But in all seriousness, I don't even
think we know what to expect.
TG - What bars in Toronto do you like to go to?
Chris I tend to hang out at the Living Well quite a bit. I go to Savage
on the weekends and kind of juggle that between that and Vatikan.
Jenn Recently I've been going a lot to both Savage and the Vatikan. I
spent New Years at Vatikan as well and it was a lot of fun. I try to get out to
some of the events at Reverb as well. Also I like to see local bands. There was
a really good Ambient showcase that was going on at C'est What.
TG - Any favourite DJ's in Toronto?
Chris Does that include people that we are friends with that we can give
plugs for?
TG - of course.
Chris Ok. It's a shame because there are a lot of good DJs out there,
and for some odd reason, all their names are eluding me at this particular
moment.
Jenn The DJ's at the Vatikan have been really great to us. DJ Bolt and
Chris - DJ XXX played some of our songs for us. Which is great.
Chris And DJ Vox has been a good friend to us. And I'd have to say DJ M
has been a good DJ.
TG - Where can we hear more of your music?
Chris At our band site which is www.perdition.com
TG - Well thank you Jenn & Chris for sitting down and chatting with
me. Looking forward to the show at the Vatikan.
Jenn Good. Thank you.
Chris As are we. I'm really looking forward to getting the music out and
allowing more people to be exposed to it. I like it.
Jenn The show should be really good. I'm looking forward to it.
Chris It will be good to take the edge off. Just starting off the new
year with a fresh show. Now that two-thirds of us are new line-up. It is going
to give us a chance. Besides Steven being the veteran, and Thor especially -
he's an old favourite from way back when. No. We are really excited to be
playing at the Vatikan in February. And I hope that I see quite a few people
out there to expose them to
Raven Stay away from expose
Chris Yes, expose and Chris are just two bad words that just don't go
together. To show people what we are about. I think that playing live as
opposed to be on the CD, you are going to hear more of us in more of a raw
form. I don't know, more raw emotion - I like to use as a word
Oh gee I
thought we were supposed to take ourselves seriously
(Chris does the
duck).
