Reaction to Sept 11

I saw an image of the Statue of Liberty last night. I never noticed this before - and perhaps it's just the weight of the horror that was the day - but Columbia sure looked like she was crying.

This ... was an unmistakeable, unilateral Declaration of War.

In 1939, the Western Democracies put their collective feet down to stop a murderous ideaology from dominating Europe. I sincerely hope the Western World will do so once again. Islamic Fundamentalism passed from the categorization of "Religion" to "Ideaology" yesterday in the space of 20 minutes, though some would argue (correctly) that Islamic Fundamentalism has always been more politically motivated than clerically ...

It is time for North America to start being far more diligent at the Border and far less "lax" at our Airports and Train Stations. I wouldn't wish to be the Head of Security at Boston's Logan Airport today. Personally, I really don't mind thoroughness and diligence. At least that way, I know I'm safer when I travel.

It is also time to demand our Government be far more scrutinizing in its Immigration policies. It is time for *ALL* Canadians to carry Passports, even just to cross into the United States. And vice versa.

And it is time to no longer tolerate within North American borders the sickening rhetoric that accompanies foreign nationals who bring their "homeland issues" with them when they come to live here "for a better life". By coming to the New World, I believe the idea was supposed to be to embrace the ideals of the New Republic and the New Democracy.

Make no mistake: as far as I am concerned, anyone who attempts any kind of justification for yesterday's events is just as guilty of decrying our way of life as those thousands - AND THERE WERE THOUSANDS - of people who celebrated the death toll in the streets of Gaza, Ramallah, Baghad, Tehran and the West Bank. Simply put, if you don't like the Freedom that you enjoy in North America, and you don't respect the men and women who died on foreign shores so that you can have that Freedom, then I suggest you apply to live somewhere where your "right to an opinion" might not be so easy to come by.

For what its worth, Old Syn used to be one of those that firmly believed Israel was wrong in its treatment of Palestinians. Watching those celebrations, with pure, abject disgust, completely changed my mind. I also believe that Palestine, as a sympathetic political entity, died at 8:45 a.m. yesterday morning.

Islamic Fundamentalism declared War yesterday, and we absolutely MUST prosecute it. We can't be sheep just waiting to be slaughtered any longer.

"... It used to be said that the 'Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilence. It is obvious we, as a North American society, weren't "vigilent" enough ..."
