Out of all the social
movements that are out there to appease today's adolescence, the gothic
movement appears to the most flamboyant of them all. This world wide faction,
goes way beyond the love of one Marilyn Manson which to the younger generation
has become the Holy Grail, of what youth believe is the founding stepping stone
for the young gothics every where. As well as, the idea that to be a
"Goth" you are only accepted as one of pale white stature. This just
goes to show you, those youth or otherwise, misled Mansonites that have their
one-track minds could never be so wrong. In fact, the Gothic movement is and
has been joined by several people from different ethnic backgrounds.
To make this better understood, this article is no way out to bash Manson and
all fans alike, but to show the very fact that it isn't one gothic type rock
star, that makes the movement. It is infact, each individual gothic from within
the movement that truly brings out what it means to be a member in today's
Gothic society. Other than just being a sub-culture, it is also a gathering of
"lovers of the night," a large mass of artistic, literary souls who
enjoy mutual music and company of their fellow comrades of macabre. For those
out there that may disagree on what Goths should look like or what exactly
one's background should also be, in order to be accepted within this movement.
I ask you this " why are you gothic?" I mean really. What is driving
you as the potential close-minded poser to be party of this elite group of
individuals? If you're out there reading this article, and have an ounce of
reason in your bodies you will ask yourselves these questions, and find out if
you actually have what it takes to be Goth. Although, a bit unfair, I am
targeting the inexperienced Goths who sadly are the ones that are creating the
turmoil for those sincere to the gothic society, and otherwise badgering them
for not being the accustomed paleness that they seek. Goths of the truest form
are guaranteed to be displayed as dark and beautiful individuals. Glam, plasty
Goths (plastic Goths), vamps, freaks, leather bound & fetish, PVC, as well
as many more that fall under the same banner from within the gothic lifestyle.
For those that would care to know, simply knowing one that is gothic, will find
out that to dwell amongst Goths, we as a community are quite accepting of
others that are in the scene, or are at least are curious and choose to watch
from the sidelines. In order to really seek the true understanding of what it
is to be "Gothic," one should really seek the truth from those the
dwell under the title of old school Goths. Oddly enough, for those were born in
the 80's, would in fairness not know of the term " old school Goth."
One would hopefully agree that Old School Goths were and still should be
recognized as the pioneers of the movement. Musical groups of the 80's
underground cult were considered to be the inspiration of what was then called
new wave, later to be known as Goth. Some of the musical groups, were as
follows: The Cure (though stated that they were never Goth), Bauhaus, Siouxsie
and The Banshees, perhaps Alice Cooper in his own strange ways, just to name a
few. I am sure for some of you older Goths out there, know exactly where I am
coming from.
To be gothic, is more than just buying dark black clothing, or looking for a
sanctuary for acceptance and escape from reality. Such turmoil should be
rectified from within yourself. To become gothic, is being a part of an
accepting underground community, and leaving all discriminatory beliefs at the
door if you will. Therefore, you need not to be only pale white in comp lection
to be amongst fellow gothics .The best approach is being yourself, and not try
so hard. Nothing could be more annoying than having posers attempt to preach to
you their lame theories as to what the correct protocol is when becoming
gothic. I do however, strongly suggest that any and all Posers that may read my
article, try to give it some thought to what I say, and think twice before
insulting fellow Goths that may be from other ethnic backgrounds. Every one has
the right to be gothic, regardless what you may think. The lesson to be learned
here is that it isn't the music or the dark clothing that makes the Goth, it is
infact the individual from within. You are who you are, and you dress how you
feel. To be a Goth to the truest form doesn't mean you have to copy the exact
style of your favorite star either. In retrospect Goths should never feel
pressured by the idol ignorance from the posers and the uneducated alike.
Unfortunately, there are quite a large number of Goths out that are out there
that are sadly apart of a minute population that have allowed themselves to be
unopened to change, which could possibly be the cause for the attitudes and
false beliefs of these misguided youths. In hopes that my article was
informative, I can only say this " Carpe Noctem" Cease the Night! To
all my fellow Goths out there, and finally say that its time for change and
acceptance.
