Quebec Language Police << back |

submitted by Vlad from gnet & our sister site mg
Over the course of the past year we've connected with many people from around the world via GothicUnderworld.com and GothNetwork.com.

We've met some interesting people of all ages, races, genders and orientations and thank you all for your support and contributions to these sites.

Although these sites are published in English only we are well aware that many of our viewers, members and contibutors come from areas outside Canada, where we're based.

We respect the fact that some people may have difficulties interpreting our content as well as some of our services and therefore have made every effort to assist those that require it in every way possible to assure the utmost in viewer/member satisfaction.

We have recently been approachd by the Commission de Protection de la langue Francaise (The French Language Police) here in Quebec because none of our sites are published in the French Language.

According to the *cough cough* "Quebec Charter", GothNetwork.com and GothicUnderWorld.com, because we live in Quebec, are supposed to be published in the French language first, English second.

Now, "pardon my french" here, but first and foremost, both Jez and myself as well as our staff (GateKeeper, Morgana Payne and Loki all speak English, as well as French), but have chosen to cater to the other 99.9% of the world in English, and until recently no one has ever had a problem with this.

These so-called "Quebec Language Police" have decided to give us an ultimatum: Either convert your sites to French, or be fined several thousands of dollars for failure to do so". Yea. Right. We received a letter from the Quebec Government in French - NOT English! stating this. We wrote back to them stating that we were very dissapointed and overly disgusted that they wrote only in French and therefore we've decided to challenge the Quebec Government through the court systems.

Hundreds of cases thus far with similar dilemmas have already been won by people refusing to publish advertising for shops, business cards, letters and overall communications in French, as well as both personal and corporate websites, and we're confident that with your support and efforts we can come out victorious and again make the Quebec Government look like the immature bunch they seem to be.

I myself, (Vlad) have taken this very personal and will do anything I can from this point on to irk and annoy the Quebec Government to a hilt. (Being a total Anarchist most of my life this seems like a great way to release some tension in me. *L*). I've also decided to publish Montreal-Goth in English only just out of spite. :) I know, I'm naughty, yet when you think about it, these sites are owned by us, not Quebec, and if we choose to publish the sites in plain Gibberish, we will, although we've opted for straight English. :)

If you wish to show your support with us, please send us a short email to support@gothnetwork.com stating :
your first and last name
your contact email address
a breif statementthat you have no problems with our sites being in English Only.

If you wish to contact our office in Quebec, please call :450-688-5409

We thank all of our members, viewers and supporters, and assure you that it will take alot more than a "mock government" to shut us down.

Regards,
Jez and Vlad
