MDM Interview

Nux, the vocalist from MDM, recently took some time to answer a few questions for toronto-goth.com.

MDM: 2004/05 Promo Shot - Photographer Jon Evans

Dem: How did MDM come about?
Nux: MDM started as a two person (myself & DT) creative outlet in the mid- nineties. We originally started working together because we were great friends and creating music together proved to be a very fun way to use our spare time. We released two homemade cassettes and one CD between 1995 & 1998 before finally realizing that we could take this project to a greater level if we took things more seriously. In 2000 we released Dawn of A New Order which, for us, was a pivotal moment in that we had revamped our sound into the formula that we now use today. We also brought on new members Viktor and SINic for the release of Unified State of Aggression. With DT's departure from MDM in 2005 we brought on Daniel X to fill his shoes. And that brings us to where we are now, on the brink of releasing our newest CD, Modern Digital Militia.

Dem: Who's in the band and what do they do?
Nux - Vocals, Programming
Daniel X - Lead Guitars, Programming
Viktor - Rhythm Guitars, Backing Vocals
SINic - Drums

Dem: Tell me about your sound and writing process.
Nux: Our sound is mainly heavy industrial with elements of techno and drum & bass/jungle. We generally fit into the Industrial Rock category I suppose and have been compared to bands such as KMFDM, Cubanate, Acumen Nation, and others of that vein of Industrial music. We like to infuse the techno elements because it keeps the energy up and gets people moving. We tackle the writing process from many different angles. Sometimes a song will start off as a simple beat or synth line and sometimes the inspiration stems from a guitar riff or vocal bit. We generally start off simple and continue to layer the song until it becomes a complex arrangement of simple parts.

Dem: Where have you played shows over the years?
Nux: We've played all over Ontario and a little in the US.

Dem: What was your most memorable show and why?
Nux: I would have to say opening for KMFDM was the most memorable show. It was awesome to be able to share the stage with a band of such amazing calibre whom we've all loved for many years. KMFDM are one of the hardest working bands in the Industrial scene and if we all took a little bit of motivation from their work ethic I believe this scene would grow ten-fold. They are all a really great bunch of people and it was extremely inspiring to be a part of the show!

Dem: What sites should people visit to find out more about the band and listen to some tracks?
Nux: Our official website is at http://www.mdmisgovernment.com
Our Myspace page has some tracks and photos on it. http://www.myspace.com/mdmisgovernment
Our Vampirefreaks page also has some tracks and we will be posting the new CD in its entirety there for listening preview once we have a finalized release date for the album. http://www.vampirefreaks.com/mdm

Dem: What can fans (and potential fans) expect from your performance at EBMfest on October 28th?
Nux: It should prove to be a very fun and energetic performance. We've always loved playing at the Reverb and we're really looking forward to the show. We're excited to see our fans and hopefully we'll recruit a few new ones! Also *fingers crossed* we may have some pre- release copies of the new CD for sale provided we get them back from the manufacturer in time.
