Fractured Interview

Nick, the force behind Toronto's Fractured, answers a few questions for toronto-goth.com.

Dem: How did Fractured come about?
Nick: Fractured began as a 1 man outfit in early 2003 by Nick, who riding on the success of winning the :Wumpscut: Just a tenderness remix contest self-released the demo "Contami-Nation". Inspired by music like Suicide Commando and other modern electro industrial Fractured was able to make a big enough impression on label owner Stefan Herwig of Dependent Records in Germany and were signed shortly after to release "Only Human Remains" in 2005.

Dem: Who's in the band and what do they do?
The song writing is primarily done by Nick with assistance from Famine and other musicians, although there have been many hands helping in the process. Currently the live lineup consists of:
Nick (Guitar / Vocals)
Famine (Electronic Percussion)
Mitchell (Drums)
Arc (Synths)

Dem: Tell me about your sound.
Nick: I like to think of Fractured's sound as revisiting many different genres of music that has inspired me throughout my life. I enjoy mixing flavours of electronics with more organic sounds and how the songs come across live is very important to me in the writing process. We write a lot of the songs with the idea of being able to perform them live in a capacity which is beyond the typical Keyboards / Vocals of EBM Bands and attempting to capture a different live energy with live percussion and by reworking the songs to be less reliant on the backing tracks.

Dem: What's going on with your next album?
Nick: As writing goes, its impossible to force out ideas although we have been working on new material since 2005 we should have something ready shortly to share with the world. Currently we are without a label so to give an idea of when it will be available, I have no idea.

Dem: Where have you played shows over the years?
Nick: We have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many really amazing acts around Canada, next year we hope to break out and get to Europe with the release of a new album, but there is lots of practicing before that will happen :)

Dem: What was your most memorable show and why?
Nick: I think my favourite show to date would have to have been from COMA 3, we had Morgana triggering a synth via a dance-dance revolutions pad on the floor complete with pompoms and cheerleader outfit, it was quite cute and unique! Can't say I've seen anyone else pulling out the DDR pads!

Dem: How supportive do you think the Toronto scene is of local bands?
Nick: For the most part I have to thank everyone for all their amazing support over the years, if it was not for the Toronto community im sure I would not be where I am. We have always had great turn-outs to shows and our fans / friends are always great.

Dem: What sites should people visit to find out more about Fractured and listen to some tracks?
Nick: If people would like to find out more about Fractured, you can visit our website at http://www.faithisfractured.com or http://www.myspace.com/fractured.

Dem: What can fans (and potential fans) expect from your performance at EBMfest on October 28th?
Nick: I really enjoy trying something different each time we perform live, as people who have seen us before they know that we have constant line-up changes and im always changing the gear and sounds. We have a very 'metal' set lined up for the show and we are all very anxious to kick some ass.

Thanks a ton for the interview and your time, looking forward to seeing you on sunday!
In Friendship,
Nick
