Spooky Girl Makeup Meeting - 02 10 01

The first Spooky Girl meeting was held Feb 10th 2001 at Nine of Cups Cafe (1522 Queen Street West). Thanks to everyone who came out. Below are thumbnails of the pictures taken that day - full size pics and further info to follow shortly (note: full size pictures were lost, so they have to be rescanned).

Summary - by vincentprice

Really important - Start with a shiny, clean face!! Oily skin doesn’t absorb make-up very well and makes nasty smudges. Also, it may be wise to have a generous supply of cottonballs, q-tips, water, baby oil, tweezers, tissue, make-up brushes of ALL types, and a nice pillow to beat the living snot out of for when you fuck up.

List of Products used on Jennifer (pictured to the right) in order of occurrence:

1. OIL OF OLAY Moisturizer - really important stuff to protect the skin before covering it in gook.
2. MANIC PANIC’s ‘Goth White’ cream base and ‘Dreamtone’ colour corrector. Provides a nice, even, pale finish. Apply with sponges, preferably dry, for a smoother look.
3. COVER GIRL foundation ‘Classic Ivory’.
4. Studio Fix MAC NW15 powder compact and/or MANIC PANIC’s ‘Virgin’ pressed powder.
5. MAC ‘Chill’ eyeshadow base, ‘Sketch’ eyeshadow, ‘Carbon’ matte shadow, ‘Vellum’ frost eyeshadow, ‘Rose Quartz’ matte shadow, and URBAN DECAY ‘Uzi’ frost.
6. BONNE BELL ‘Black Ink’ eyeliner and mascara, and L’OREAL ‘Black’ liquid liner.
7. MAC ‘Currant’ and ‘Vino’ lipliner, MAC‘Cyber’ satin lipstick, Wet N’ Wild ‘Black satin lipstick and Urban Decay’s ‘UZI’ frost lipstick.

All the above products that were used can be replaced by any other brand name - I just have personal preferences for cosmetic application. MAC is like a corporate goddess to me, but I do attempt to try different stuff on occasion.

I chose a basic ‘gothic’ look for Jennifer though there are some new and exciting looks popping in the clubs lately I am simply ‘dying’ to try.

Jennifer saved me a great deal of agony by not wearing make-up to Nine of Cups (bless her dark little heart) so I had a clean slate to work with. I started with moisturizer and applied ‘goth white’ cream base first before adding ‘dreamtone’ corrector. After that had been smoothed out (and Jennifer’s skin started warming up - ouch, chilly!), foundation was applied carefully with a dry sponge. I find that goths tend to forget that an evenly spread foundation is really important and compliments the overall appearance of a pasty skin pallor.

From there, I applied power to set the foundation (and would continue to dust Jennifer’s face throughout the session) and started on her lovely eyes. I find eyes are the keyhole to the soul and extremely important to focus on - especially for the ‘gothic’ look. ‘Chill’ eyeshadow was applied from eyebrow bone to lash, ‘Sketch’, ‘Carbon’ and ‘Rose’ was used to define the lid and outer eye crease. ‘Vellum’ provided a shiny, purple frost just below the eyebrow and ‘Uzi’ provided a light sprinkling of fairy dust (frost.)

Since Jennifer was being so patient and hadn’t kicked me in the shins yet for poking her eyes out, I attempted to go a step further. I left her eyebrows alone since she hasn’t had the misfortune of plucking out her eyebrows and drawing them on (try sweating in the summer, you’ll figure out what eyebrows are for) - so I just combed them out and applied a little bit of ‘Carbon’. I applied a bit of ‘black’ liquid liner and finished the rest off with a pencil eyeliner to give that staple, cat-like appearance - a black, curved line across the lower lids. Mascara from outer corner was applied to the lashes inward (although I would have killed for some fake eyelashes Sophia Loren style) and complimented Jennifer’s purple smokey eyes.

As NINGurrl was beating me time-wise with her lavish make-up techniques, handy-dandy cosmetic tips with the wonders of Vaseline (and I was noticing that poor Steven and Tornsunder looked like they were gonna bang their heads against the wall from sheer boredom), I finally finished with MAC lipstick.

I find that many glam and baby Goths divulge in lighter colours and fuschia is scorchingly popular these days, so I applied ‘Currant’ and ‘Vino’ lipliner to get that pointy upper lip look and drew the line a bit below Jennifer’s bottom lip line. This was filled in with a combination of ‘Cyber’ and Wet and Wild’s ‘basic black’ for a deep rich flavour. Sort of like a lush, rotting grape colour. A bit of URBAN DECAY’S Uzi was applied for a frosty, upbeat finish.

After 45 minutes of squinting by the windows, Jennifer’s look was completed.

I think Jennifer liked the make-up application because she didn’t wash her face the whole day. Or maybe it was because she couldn’t get all the gunk off without the skin coming off with it. Either way, I think she looked absolutely fantastic - Jennifer has a beautiful, delicate bone structure that is an absolute delight to work with!

I’d say the Spooky Girl meeting was a smashing success!
