Being new to the area I had been going to the Velvet when in the
city. A week ago thursday after another attempt to break through the pompous
air at the velvet, me friends and I stopped in to Zen to check it out. I was
impressed with the feel and atmosphere of the place. The people were a lot more
approachable and I didnt notice any of the "holier than thou" attitude that has
been becoming increasingly prevalent at the velvet. From now on when I come to
the city, I'll just skip the VU and head staight to Zen

I
had always thought that the Zen Lounge was a cheesy rip-off of the Kingdom or
Phoenix on Edge102 nights, trying to be like one of the big boys in such a
small location compared to its counter-parts. Yet I would wonder just what was
going on in there as I would pass it along my travels to and from Velvet and
Savage. About a month ago I had went along with a friend just to see what it
was like and to exercise my curiousity. What I discovered was the beauty of the
music of Sanctuary with the added comforts of running water and sufficient
ventilation and pool tables that weren't ripped to shreds. Ever since
Sanctuarys death my friends and I have been searching long and hard for a club
that could match its hightendness, and much to our dismay The Anarchist's
Cocktail was the only club that came close before it too perhished (most likely
due to its high rent despite its bad location). Thursday's just rule.
$2.50 mixed drinks/shots! Free pool, and Industrial/hard rock/goth music.
Friday's & Sat's are just as good, basically the same type of music, I
think they mix it up more but I'm not exactly sure what the focus is.
Zen Lounge is awesome, and I've been going there quite consistently ever since
my first visit and I plan to continue to do so. If you love cheap drinks,
pretty lights, a relaxed atmosphere, and most importantly sonic ecstasy-like
music, then perhaps I'll see you there too! (I'm the hot guy with the bandana).
