Rub and Tug Sundays with DJ Phink and Jimi Lamort

Stopped by the Lava Lounge (507 College, just west of Bathurst) on Sunday April 21st to check out the new night by two self-proclaimed old farts (DJ Phink and Jimi LaMort aka da Jive Talking Robot).

DJ Phink is well known in the scene for his work with DARKRAVES, Fetish Masquerades, various Deep Sea Fish presentations, and he's also brought to Toronto numerous bands including Covenant and VNV Nation. Jimi Lamort (James Cavalluzo) is the singer and driving force behind Malhavoc. You'll also recall his work with Northbound Leather's iSM Fetish Nights @ Limelight (recently moved to 5VE at 5 St. Joseph St. around the corner from Northbound Leather.)

I'd never been to the Lava Lounge before. As expected from the name, Lava Lounge provided a comfortable atmosphere conducive to lounging. If you're looking for a more relaxed evening in a sophisticated environment, but still need the loud music, definately check this night out. I didn't spend any time on the dancefloor (no fault of the DJs because I enjoyed the music) but I was happy one existed in this venue. Also special mention goes out to the art decor, a lot of which was done by "Pussy Willow" of Universal Love Attack. Check out more of her artwork and music at www.universalloveattack.com

The night features bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Placebo, The Faint, Fischerspooner, Miss Kitten, Soft Cell ( Marc Almond ), Felix da Housecat, Anthony Rother, Kraftwerk, Adult , the Hacker, Orgy etc.. Jimi Lamort also strives to expose your ears to tunes that are not heard at other clubs.

The Lava Lounge was not packed on Sunday night - but it was definately not empty either. As for drink prices, I had my usual Labatt Ice, which was $4 (plus tip) so that isn't too bad. Last night was only the second installment of this new Sunday night, so I'm sure the crowd will definately build as time goes on - I know I'll be back.
