6th Anniversary for
Canada's Rue Morgue Magazine (www.rue-morgue.com)
Toronto, CANADA - Halloween
2003 will mark the Sixth Anniversary of RUE MORGUE, Canada's original,
independent horror culture and entertainment magazine, a homegrown success
story that has taken the North American horror industry by storm. Officially
launched two days before Halloween in 1997 by founder/editor Rod Gudino, RUE
MORGUE has become a genre institution and one of the leading magazines in its
field.
Features on genre legends David Cronenberg, George Romero and
Ray Bradbury, a retrospective on German Expressionism, the philosophy of Soren
Kierkegaard, a look at Jack the Ripper in film, music and theatre, horror in
comic books, ghost films of Japan, Eurohorror, independent splatter flicks,
funeral songs, and the golden age of Universal Monsters - have all made it to
the pages of RUE MORGUE. As a leading genre publication in North America, RUE
MORGUE has also brought horror audiences at home and abroad a uniquely Canadian
perspective on the art and industry of fear.
"Historically, Canadians
have never had a journalistic avenue to express their views on this topic,"
says Gudino. "I think that's reflected in our cultural emphasis and our
interest in horror outside of North America."
In the past six years,
RUE MORGUE has expanded its name to its popular CineMacabre Movie Night, held
every third Wednesday of every month at The Vatikan Nightclub (1032 Queen
Street West, Toronto). Through this specialized event, RUE MORGUE has premiered
and brought exposure to rare film finds from around the world, including Don
Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep, Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer, Stuart Gordon's
Dagon, Hideo Nakata's Ringu, Dog Soldiers and many, many more. RUE MORGUE will
be presenting the Toronto premiere of Brian Yuzna's highly anticipated BEYOND
RE-ANIMATOR for their October CineMacabre Movie Night (Wed. October 15, doors
open at 8 PM). On Wed Oct 22, also at the Vatikan, RUE MORGUE will be
presenting the Canadian premiere of FLESH FOR THE BEAST, absolutely free, as
part of a month-long Halloween festivities.
This October, RUE MORGUE
officially kicks off its sixth publishing year with its one-of-a-kind Annual
Halloween Bash - CIRCUS OF THE GROTESQUE - which will, for the first time, be
open to the public. Sponsored exclusively by Anchor Bay Entertainment, CIRCUS
OF THE GROTESQUE will be a night of Halloween horror in the tradition of the
classic freak shows of the past. The event will feature a host of oddities, the
likes of The Human Hazard Shriek Show (feat. The Lunatic Lawnmower Man,
Chainsaw Juggler and The World's Most Dangerous Salad!), Weird & Wicked
Wrestling Girls, The Rue Morgue Go-Go Ghouls and The Conjurer Corpse, along
with The Madcap Melodies of AstroGroove and all nite Terror Tunes of DJ Bolt
& DJ Dragomir and lots more (Friday October 24, 2003 at The Church at
Berkeley, 315 Queen St. East. Doors open at 8 PM). Advance tickets are
available from www.rue-morgue.com.
RUE MORGUE's Sixth Anniversary
Halloween Special Double Issue, the largest to date, clocks in at a whopping
140 glossy pages and is packed full of unique horrorbilia including an
exclusive interview with genre legend RICHARD (I Am Legend, The Twilight Zone,
The Legend of Hell House) MATHESON and a look at Matheson's literary legacy and
enduring influence on television and film on the cusp of a revival of his
works. Also featured is a roundtable with DON (Phantasm) COSCARELLI and BRUCE
(Evil Dead) CAMPBELL on their soon-to-be cult classic movie BUBBA HO-TEP.
Elsewhere, WES (A Nightmare on Elm Street) CRAVEN discusses his backwoods
horror classic THE HILLS HAVE EYES, while the Rue Morgue Crew dissects the 2003
FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL and director Joe Dante reflects on THE HOWLING. RUE
MORGUE's 6th Anniversary Halloween Issue also gives readers a TRAVELOGUE OF
TERROR, TOYS FROM TWISTED OZ and reviews of the latest horror movies, DVDs,
books, comic books and bands from around the world!
