Evil Dead 1&2: The Musical
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 7th to August 23rd, 2003 Beyond Chutleigh Productions presents:
Evil Dead 1&2: The Musical

Five teenagers away for the weekend…an old abandoned cabin in the woods…What could possibly go wrong?

It’s the old familiar story that we know and love; Boy meets Girl, Boy unleashes ancient Evil Spirit, Girl turns into zombie, Boy must fight to survive until dawn as his friends turn into undead around him. Before Spiderman or A Simple Plan, Sam Raimi directed the low budget horror film Evil Dead. Realising that the film was more comic than scary, a large following quickly sprung up around the film as well as its two sequels, Evil Dead II, and Army of Darkness. “The trilogy delves further and further into farce and camp”, says director Chris Bond, “turning them into a musical was just the next logical step.” StudioCanal and Anchor Bay Entertainment (proprietors of the two films) both leapt to support a project to bring Evil Dead to the stage with new music, new songs and a new script. When the musical premieres in Toronto in August, numbers like “Cabin in the Woods” and “Do the Necromonacon!” guarantee that this hilarious romp through these campy horror classics will be a huge success.

George Reinblatt, a local writer who has made his name working at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, and writing comedy for the likes of Denis Leary, Wayne Brady, Rick Mercer, Bill Maher, and The Tonight Show, joins forces with Christopher Bond, a director and performer who is currently appearing in Second City’s Tony & Tina’s Wedding, to bring bold new life to this cult classic.

Beyond Chutleigh Productions is very excited about this upcoming collaboration. The company was formed in Herstmonceux, England in 1997 as an independent company of up-and-coming theatre professionals with the mandate to create unique and diverse performance pieces and to engage emerging theatre professionals in a supportive and stimulating company environment. Beyond Chutleigh has recently drawn capacity audiences with their Toronto debut, a comedy/drama Pick-Up Bras and Long Term Shorts at the 2003 Fringe Festival and is looking forward to following up that success with this original musical.
