'Trying to decide the best band to come out of Manchester may be an impossible task but the most underrated must surely be The Chameleons'. - Mark Ellingham & John Buckley, Rough Guide to Rock, c. 1999

Formed in 1981 in a town just north of Manchester, The Chameleons burst onto the scene with their 1982 single "In Shreds", a mournful, stirring song that caught the attention of notorious DJ John Peel. Their fluid, jangling guitar chords and vocals that were strong but never strident marked them as a band significantly ahead of their time. Presaging the Britpop era by several years, strong echoes of The Chameleons influence can be found in The Cure, James and Echo and The Bunnymen, just to name a few.

The Chameleons first album, "Script of the Bridge", was released in 1983 on Statik Records to good reviews, followed in 1983 by "What Does Anything Mean? Basically". 1986 saw The Chameleons recording for Geffen Records, when they released "Strange Times", a stunning album that contained the throbbing dancefloor classic "Swamp Thing". It was fifteen years before the world saw another release by The Chameleons, when they roared back to life with 2001's "Why Call It Anything".

The band has been gifted with a strongly loyal fanbase, as evidenced by the overwhelming response to the announcement of their current North American tour. Their recent live shows in the UK have been met with uniformly positive responses from the British music press.
