Flux Fridays @ Savannah Lounge Cancelled
Flux Fridays with DJ Lazarus @ the Savannah Lounge are cancelled. The last night was Friday September 21st.

The grand opening of Flux Friday's took place on August 10th, after being pushed back a while due to renovations at Savannah Lounge (69 Bathurst Street, formerly Studio 69). Lazarus had previously held a night by the same name at the Rockit club. You can still catch him every Sunday @ Velvet Underground, the 1st Saturday of every month at the Reverb for the Dark Rave, and the 3rd Saturday of every month at the Reverb for the Fetish Masquerade.

Here's the official announcement from DJ Lazarus:

It is with mixed reactions and a couple of reasons that I am cancelling Flux Fridays at Savannah Lounge. Last night (Fri Sept 21) was the lowest attendance yet at only 68 people through the door. Therefore, with help from the club, I decided it would be my last night working there. Savannah will not be open next Friday of course. The club, and myself, are obviously not overwhelmed with this relatively poor attendance. I take solace knowing that my attendance was better than most of the established Fridays at the competition. However, Savannah Lounge is a large club and perceptions of emptiness are easily invoked even if there is a crowd gathering. Maybe if the club was much smaller it might have worked? Then 50 people in the club would seem better. It also makes me sad and laugh when I see people come into the club and then just leave because it is not crowded. If all the people that did that actually stayed, then the night may have looked busier. Oh well, nobody likes to be the first.

Secondly, I also feel Savannah Lounge never kept several promises to me. They never did get new couches and seating, never got new lighting, never renovated the bathrooms, never brought back the pool tables and never offered drink specials before 1130pm, like I was told they would. I believe these factors made it a steeper up hill battle. Every Friday when I arrived at Savannah Lounge I would spend some time setting up lights, a smoke machine, a VCR, and tables and chairs. I did this because I wanted the night to look good, but I shouldn't have to do this if I was working at a club that cares or takes the night seriously.

Thirdly, and this one bothers me the most. Savannah Lounge hired a woman to help with promotion. I appreciate this, but... She had flyers designed without my approval and distributed them outside, and inside competetive clubs. This is a political no-no. In all the years I have DJ'ed and done promotions, not once, have I lowered myself to acts of desperation by distributing flyers inside or outside of the competition. I feel that this incidence has tarnished my reputation even though it was done without my knowledge. I apologize to any pissed of club owners or DJ's, but please understand that this was not my doing. In the future, like in the past, I will take care of all design and promotion of events that bear my name.

Last night when I got home, I stayed up very late designing DARKRAVE and 'Heroes of the 80's' flyers and posters and was thinking about the state of the scene. The goth/industrial alternative scene is shrinking to dangerous proportions. It reached it' s heyday in the early/mid 90's and is now on the decline. I feel this way because none of the alternative clubs are as busy as they used be and you can't keep a goth/industrial night going outside of a major metropolitan area. Since things are so slow right now I think you may even see a couple of clubs go under in the next several months. This is a sign of an aging club population with not many new people to replace them as they leave the scene. Sad really. I think this can by contributed to the total lack of airplay on the radio or TV of the majority of the music that is played at goth/industrial nights. This may sound weird or taboo to say, but if some of the more commercially viable music like VNV, Covenant, or Wolfsheim got even a little bit of airplay it would help revitalize the scene slightly and get new blood out to the clubs. Once those warm bodies are there you can play all the underground stuff you want and they may even like it. Maybe we should inundate Muchmusic and CFNY with requests to try to get this stuff played or try and get Pierre's idea for Radio X off the ground. Both are long shots, but sometimes miracles happen. ;)

I will once again refocus my attention to my monthly parties, special events, Sideshow Sundays and the concert I am planning for next summer.

Thanks to all those that did attend Flux Fridays. I really do appreciate it. I encourage everyone out there to attend the clubs and events you like before they are gone.
